HeartBeats & Harmonies: Can Music Boost Cardiovascular Health?
"Discover how an interprofessional community collaboration used music to increase cardiovascular health knowledge."
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a leading health concern in the United States, despite ongoing efforts to reduce mortality. Approximately one-third of all deaths in the U.S. are attributed to CVD, resulting in significant annual costs, exceeding $316 billion in 2012. The American Heart Association (AHA) emphasizes the importance of promoting cardiovascular health through healthy behaviors across the lifespan to combat this issue.
Key health behaviors aimed at improving cardiovascular health include proper diet, regular exercise, and smoking cessation. These behaviors directly target modifiable cardiovascular risk factors such as blood lipids, blood pressure, and blood glucose levels. Additionally, arrhythmias, particularly undiagnosed atrial fibrillation (AF), pose a significant cardiovascular health concern, increasing the risk of stroke if left untreated. Awareness and early detection are crucial.
To tackle CVD, arrhythmias, and promote healthy lifestyles, an interprofessional team from Florida Southern College organized a unique health promotion event called 'Rhythms of the Heart'. This event provided targeted health education and identified CVD risk factors in a diverse population, including students, employees, and community members, striving to promote and preserve cardiovascular health.
